Susan “Suzie” Hunter Hatcher

February 7, 1933 - February 22, 2020

On February 22 a wonderful and very talented woman died. Suzie was born in Marshall, Texas to William Carr Hunter and Helen Chavannes Hunter.  She grew up in Oklahoma City, graduating from Classen High School in 1950. SheattendedOSU and was initiated Zeta Tau Alpha (ZTA).  Transferring to OU, she assisted in organizing a ZTA chapter there.  She married her high school sweetheart, Thane W. Hatcher on December 28, 1951 at Wesley United Methodist church and together they raised four boys with help from a dog named Sam.  As promised to her parents, Suzie went back to college to finish her degree. She received her Bachelor of Artsdegree in Oral Communication from Central State University in 1979 graduating cum laude.  She began her career in journalism working as an editor for The Vista student newspaper. She then worked as a feature writer and restaurant reviewer for the Daily Oklahoman.

Suzie was an active member in her church and community. She was a member of Chapter AC of PEO and volunteered in many service organizations including Ronald McDonald House, Mobile Meals, Christmas Connection and several breast cancer survivor groups such asBosom Buddies, Komen Race for the Cure and American Cancer Society’s Reach to Recovery. As an active ZTA alum she served in every office of the local chapter then went on to be a national officer and board member of the ZTA Foundation. Suzie was recognized as ZTA Woman of the Year in 2011.She was recently inducted into DAR.

Suzie will be remembered as a good storyteller, an enthusiastic host, a family historian, a loyal friend and a loving grandmother. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Thane; three sons, Richard and wife Elizabeth, Tom and wife Hilary, and Jay; grandchildren Alan; Ricky, Ashley McCarrell (Derrick), Jason, Gregg; Andy, Joey, Cassey; and 6 great-grandchildren: Collin and Payton Hatcher; Ryleigh, Zoey and Zane Austin McCarrell; and Olivia Hatcher. Son Ross preceded her in death in 1993. Suzie loved caring and playing with the kids and they thought their convertible-driving grandmother was very cool!

A Memorial Service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4400 N. Shartel in Oklahoma City on Friday, February 28, 2020 at 1:00 pm.
